Kalives settlement lies opposite to the entrance of Souda Bay, in an ancient territory called “Ippocoronion” which means the horses of the Crown (Kings’ horses).
They have given this name to the area, because the ground was so fertile and green that was found fit pastureland for the horses of the Crown. In Kalives, on Kasteli (Castle) area, a hill with a breath taking view, there are still some remnants of that old town.
The present name “Kalives” (shacks) came from the Arab pirates at 828a.C. who made a landing on the territory and built huts to live in.
At the west of Kalives, nearby, is located the small village Kalami, with the Fortress Itzethin built during the Turkish domination, and after that, in the village Megala Chorafia, was the great ancient city of Aptera, with its castle that still dominates the area.
At the northeast of Kalives one can admire the picturesque Gavalochori, with its famous wells, the traditional Vamos which is the capital of the Apokoronas Province, while in the cosmopolitan seaside Giorgioupoli one can take a small relaxed ride on a back of a horse.
Some other places worth seeing are the wonderful lake Kourna and the great Gorges of the region, which are world famous for their scenic beauty, with Samaria Gorge being the best.
